Wassenaar/The Hague – Port of Rotterdam

On our way back we have […]

Een rondje Den Haag – Nijmegen – Limburg en terug

The Hague – Limburg round tour These are the tracks of my tour to the South of The Netherlands. I cycled this tour to visit friends in Nijmegen and Sittard. The full route is around 465km. Track 1 The first part goes mostly along the big rivers. It is flat until the end, where there are a few very moderate […]

Wassenaar – Leiden – Lisse – Noordwijk – Wassenaar

Delft – Maassluis – Hoek van Holland – Wassenaar (75 km)

One of my favourite standard routes is this one: Wassenaar - Delft - Maassluis - Hoek van Holland - Wassenaar (75 km). Often I try small variations, like last Saturday in Maassluis. It was market day and I could not cycle my standard route. This variation worked out rather well, but I had to get off my bike and walk [...]

Cycling to Rotterdam during winter

On my program of today was cycling to Rotterdam. It was a very nice winter day with sunshine. The temperatures were close to zero degrees and with the strong north-eastern wind it felt like freezing. A good day for cycling to Rotterdam to have a tea with a friend.. You can download the gpx file, but this is not the […]

First bicycle tour of 2018: Wassenaar – Westland

Most of the days it is raining, raining, raining. But…. sometimes the sky becomes lighter and even some sunshine appears. Like today. My first tour was one of my standard tours: from home to Delft, then via the greenhouses area Westland to Maassluis, on to Hook of Holland and back home along the coast. It’s just over 60 kilometers. May [...]

To my favourite bicycle shop in Ter Aar

Holland has many bicycle shops and I have a few favourites. One is Bike4Travel in Rotterdam, the other is Van Eijk in Ter Aar. In both shops the people are friendly, very professional and offer good service. Although the weather doesn’t look inviting, we decided to cycle to Ter Aar, to pay a visit to the bicycle shop. From Wassenaar it is a nice [...]

Wassenaar – Tiel – Wassenaar

Fietsen in Normandië – Bretagne, Frankrijk (lente 2017)

Wassenaar – Groningen via the new polders

In August 2016 I made trip to Groningen, in the North of The Netherlands. This time I wanted to take another route than a year ago, so I decided to go via the polders, reclaimed land in the IJsselmeer. The first track was very nice via small back roads to Muiderberg, leading me from home to the start of the [...]

Arnhem (The Netherlands) – Berlin – 915 km

From 15 to 23 July 2016 we cycled from Arhem in The Netherlands to Berlin. We followed the ‘Europa – Radweg R1’ as described in the Bikeline Radtourenbuch, which is (as far as I know) only available in German. This R1 is a big chunk of the total tour, which runs from Boulogne sur Mer in France all the way to Sint [...]

Day 4. Valkenswaard – Breda – Wassenaar (back home) 158km

Today was the opposite of yesterday. It was a sunny day, the route was a nice mix of attractive scenery and roads to make good progress. I changed my original plan to cycle to the province of Zeeland and go home tomorrow. Tomorrow’s weather forcast shows a lot of rain and potential thunderstorms. I hate thunderstorms in the open country. [...]

Day 3. Sittard – Valkenswaard (70 km)

The reason for my trip to the South of The Netherlands is, apart from the nice scenery, to visit long term friends. This morning I spent some very nice hours with my friends, but this afternoon I had to start my way back. Next time I have to spend more time in town, because Sittard is actually a very scenic [...]

Day 2. Berg en Dal – Sittard (115 kilometres)

This morning I started with heavy rain, but after 40 minutes it became dry and the rest of the day I had reasonable to nice weather. This is a mixed route with very nice parts and long stretches along main roads (with very good bicycle paths). If I had more time to spend, I would try to skip the main [...]

Dag 1. Wassenaar – Berg en Dal (142 kilometres)

(Nog vertalen) Although the weather is not so good, I started a tour of a few days through the Southern part of The Netherlands. Day 1 took me from Wassenaar (at the sea) to Berg en Dal at the border with Germany. That’s how small Holland: just a few hours (well, seven to be accurate) cycling from the sea to [...]

Wassenaar – Zoetermeer (GPX-track)

This is my first gpx track edited with Adze software. From Wassenaar-Zuid the route passes Leidsendam and Leidschenveen, the new expansion of The Hague. Then you are in the country side until you reach Zoetermeer. The route follows the old roads which are now quiet and cyclist friendly. Once you rounded Zoetermeer, the route back is all country side. Just [...]

Den Haag – Maasvlakte – Oostvoorne – Maassluis – Delft

This 95 kilometres long route is very special because it combines relatively quiet nature with impressive views of the port of Rotterdam. The trip with the Fast Ferry from Hoek van Holland to the Maasvlakte is very nice. If you are happy, you can spot some seals (zeehonden). Who would expect that in this industrial environment? Once you arrive at the [...]

Cycling in ‘het Groene Hart’ (the Green Heart) of Holland

‘Het Groene Hart’ (the Green Heart) is a green area in the so called Randstand in the Western part of The Netherlands. It is more or less the area between Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam. You would not expect quiet roads and small villages in the proximity of the big cities. But on a bicycle you can really make [...]

Cycling at the English – Scottish border

Every year Jos and I go cycling for a week. Last year we had a big tour in Spain with Jos, Marjo and myself. This year we plan to add a few kilometers (or should I say miles?) to our North Sea Cycle Tour project. We covered the Dutch, German and most of the Danish parts already and also the [...]

Bække – Gammelstrup, 80 kilometers

Day 5 of my cycling tour to Jutland, Denmark (final day). The official start from Bække is a serious gravel road, but fortunately my little guide book presented me with an asphalt alternative of 11 kilometers. To me that is a no- brainer. Okay, I missed some historic point of interest, but my main purpose is to visit our friends [...]

Tarp – Bække 145 km

Just a short note,no Wifi. It was a long day with some showers and some sunny periods. In Denmark many small roads are gravel roads, grrr!!! Not the nice, small gravel, but ‘dirt roads’ with sand and small stones. Maybe it’s because I am on a historic route, but in that case they made their point. Jutland is not flat, [...]

Glûckstadt – Tarp 135 kilometers

Day 3 of my cycling trip to Denmark. From Glûckstadt the route is more or less straight to the North. The day started with a blue sky and a moderate wind to push me to Denmark. It’s a mixed scenery with more extensive farm lands than before and with nice little houses. I see dark skies around me and the [...]

Westerstede – Glūckstadt 160 kilometer

Day 2 of my cycling trip to Jutland problably the most beautiful stretch, may be apart from the last piece in Denmark in the area where our friends live. The weather was excellent, which makes everything attractive, but still, today felt like cycling through a huge park with farms and small villages. Most farms are old, with nice old farm [...]

The Hague – Emmen – Westerfeld, train + 120 km cycling

Day 1 of my Jutland cycling trip: Tuesday 12 August 2014 It was an early day, going to Emmen by train and starting my cycling trip to Denmark from there. Since there are no paper train tickets any more and since nowadays there are more train companies in Holland, you need to find out many details. But I managed to [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 14. A day in Santiago de Compostela

After thirteen days of cycling it was good to enjoy being in Santiago de Compostela. We went to the pilgrims office to collect our final stamp and certificate and to the ‘Nederlandse Kamer’ (Dutch Room) to have a chat and a coffee. There we learned that we could get and extraordinary, extra certificate from the Saint Francis church. They give [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 13. Rodeiro – Santiago de Compostela 80 km

Yes, we arrived in Santiago de Compostella! After 1150 kilometers of cycling in the heat and the cold, in the rain (we had heavy rain this very morning) and in bright sunshine, early this afternoon we arrived in Santiago de Compostela. Our last cycling day was actually a normal day, with a seven o’clock breakfast in rural Rodeiro, various weather [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 12. Allariz – Rodeira 80 kilometers

‘Thou shall not take shortcuts through big cities’ should be in my manual for future cycling tours. Today we did take a shortcut through Ourense, which saved us 20 kilometers on a cold and rainy day. I must confess that it was my proposal and that I was the one that suffered most. Jos and Marjo were not so stressed [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 11. Vendas da Barreira – Allariz 68 kilometers

We continued along the national road N-525 all the way to Allariz. After a mild climb, a very long descend followed. Combined with the light fog (actually we cycled in the clouds) the low temperature of only 2 degrees Centigrade made the descend an extremely cold experience. Early on during our tour we needed the downhill stretches to cool down, [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 10. Puebla de Sanabria – Vendas da Barreira 72 kilometers

While the weather is hot at home in The Netherlands, we are freezing in Spain. But we don’t complain, it only started to rain after 70 kilometers, where we found a comfortable place to stay. We started the day In Puebla de Sanabria by going back to the main road, the N-525. This is, like the N-630, a long national [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 9. Villarinn de Campos – Puebla de Sanabria 110 kilometers

Sunday in Spain means it is even more quiet in the villages than on other days. At least that is what we expected. But that’s not the case. In the first place the villages look deserted every day of the week. More importantly, we found a nice café to drink coffee in the otherwise deserted village Bretocino. Actually it was [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 8. Fuentesauco – Zamora – Villarrin de Campos 80 kilometers

The first part of today’s track was from Fuentesauco to Zamora. We had a cold start with temperatures of around 10 degrees Centigrade. That means an extra jacket, extra warm gloves (which Jos and Marjo have, I don’t) and extra leg warmers. It stayed cold most of the day, except when sitting in the sun, out of the wind. Again, [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 7. Guijuelo – Fuentesauco 88 kilometers

Yesterday we left Extremadura and entered the region of Castillo y Léon. This region is wel known for its green scenery and coolness. We can confirm that it is much greener than Extremadura and also that it is cool, very cool, especially during the morning. We left Guijuelo around 7.30 am and it was not cool, it was cold. The [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 6. Plasencia – Guijuelo 85 kilometers

The USA has its Famous Route 66 and also the spectacular 101. Spain has its N-630, a road from South to North (vv), but we don’t know if it is famous. Since the new autovia De la Plata has almost been finished, the N-630 is now very quiet. We decided to follow the N-630 from Plasencia all the way to [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 5. Trujillo – Plasencia 80 kilometers.

The highlight of today’s track was the National Parc of Monfragüe with its rocks and impressive griffon vultures (Dutch: vale gieren). These birds have a wing span of 2.3 to 2.8 meters and can stay in the air for hours without moving a wing. We saw many of them searching for a prey. Last year they ate a woman’s body [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 4. Mérida – Trujillo 110 km

Mérida has not stolen my heart. OK, it has its important monuments, but the city as a whole was hot and not very inviting. Trujillo is a completely different story. We arrived here in the afternoon, found good accomodation in Hostel Emilia and washed off the dust of another hot day. To arrive here, we had to cycle 110 kilometers [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 3. Extremadura: land without shade

Our third day took us from Fuente de Cantos to Mérida, just over 100 kilometers. After two days with a lot of climbing, this was an easier day. We had some serious slopes, but most of the track was mildly going up and down. For Dutch cyclist it’s still rather hilly. Most of the day we cycled between wine yards [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 2. Buen Camino.

The Via de la Plata is more than just a cycling (or walking) tour from Seville to Santiago de Compostella. It’s a pilgrims route. Already in the Roman era the Via de la Plata was an important route from South to North; it was also important for trade. After the grave of Saint Jacob was discoverd in Santiago de Compostella [...]

Via de la Plata. Day 1. A difficult day

We planned to ride this tour with the four of us as a team, but sadly, Kees has to return home. One of his children needs to undergo urgent surgery in hospital. First Kees’ son told him to stay in Spain, but under these circumstances Kees wants to be at home. Hopefully everything will be all right. So we started [...]

Via de la Plata: from Sevilla to Santiago de Compostela

From 9 to 24 May 2014 we will travel to Spain to cycle the Via de la Plata from Sevilla to Santiago de Compostela. This route is also called the Camino de Santiago. The following quote comes from a site about the Camino de Santiago: The Via de la Plata is the longest of the pilgrim routes in Spain, starting [...]

Harwich – Scarborough – Hull

This route is part of the North Sea Cycling route. We cycled this part during spring 2010. We planned to take the ferry from Newcastle back to Holland, but we didn’t have a lot of time. So we turned around somewhere after Scarborough and took the ferry from Hull. Download link is:
