This is my second route this summer to the port of Rotterdam. Starting from the The Hague area, it is a pleasant ride trough the dunes to Hoek of Holland. The Fast Ferry takes you from Hoek van Holland to the Maasvlakte, an area of reclaimed land with the newest container terminals of Rotterdam.
The port of Rotterdam is a very interesting area. It may not be the first destination that comes to your mind when you plan a cycling trip. Still, I can recommend doing it. You can go for a short ride from the ferry stop to FutureLand, where you can get an impression of the newest developments, including information how port activities, nature and environment are approached as an integrated development. (Their approach to store CO2 is not generally accepted by the environmental organisations, but at least there is a lot of attention to become a sustainable, carbon neutral port.)
cycling route Maasvlakte – Europort and back
I cycled from the ferry stop via the Maasvlakte all the way to the Benelux tunnel (there is a separate tube for cyclists). Somewhere halfway you can take a small ferry for foot-passengers and cyclists to the pretty town of Brielle. (Alternatively, you can follow the signs to Brielle earlier on during this tour.)
I had to make a detour via Spijkenisse and Hoogvliet because the Botlek bridge was closed to cyclists.
Back on the northern shore, the route goes via Delft (very nice town) back to The Hague/Wassenaar.
