One of my favourite standard routes is this one: Wassenaar – Delft – Maassluis – Hoek van Holland – Wassenaar (75 km). Often I try small variations, like last Saturday in Maassluis. It was market day and I could not cycle my standard route. This variation worked out rather well, but I had to get off my bike and walk a few metres to the bicycle path along the Nieuwe Waterweg. It seems as if they try to hide this attractive path as much as possible.

I will make a standard track next time, avoiding busy roads all together, which is possible. Also, I will continue along the sea instead of taking the busier city route in The Hague.

Update June 2018 – I made a gps track.

I followed as much as possible quiet roads and bicycle paths. So now I can add the map and the gps track.

Cycling to Rotterdam during winter

On my program of today was cycling to Rotterdam. It was a very nice winter day with sunshine. The temperatures were close to zero degrees and with the strong north-eastern wind it felt like freezing. A good day for cycling to Rotterdam to have a tea with a friend..

You can download the gpx file, but this is not the nicest route to take. I would prefer a slightly more touristic route, but given the strong wind, I chose a road back home with some protection.

Still I passed some nice points. On the picture you can see a typical Dutch windmill in the old scenery. But if you have a close look at the background, you can see the new house getting rather close.

To my favourite bicycle shop in Ter Aar

[spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ simplified_controls=”yes” custom_css_percentage=”no” padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ margin_vertical=”0″ custom_css=”margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;” border_size=”0″ border_styling_global=”default” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Holland has many bicycle shops and I have a few favourites. One is Bike4Travel in Rotterdam, the other is Van Eijk in Ter Aar. In both shops the people are friendly, very professional and offer good service. Although the weather doesn’t look inviting, we decided to cycle to Ter Aar, to pay a visit to the bicycle shop.

From Wassenaar it is a nice route through the fields, actually ‘the green heart of Holland’, as it is called. It sounds unbelievable in this area, but you can ride the whole track without traffic lights. All crossings are bicycle bridges or tunnels. Very nice!

I arrived back home with a pair of new bicycle gloves for the upcoming winter.

And the weather was actually not too bad. No rain, just a bit foggy, which gives a special atmosphere to the scenery.

Den Haag – Maasvlakte – Oostvoorne – Maassluis – Delft

This 95 kilometres long route is very special because it combines relatively quiet nature with impressive views of the port of Rotterdam. The trip with the Fast Ferry from Hoek van Holland to the Maasvlakte is very nice. If you are happy, you can spot some seals (zeehonden). Who would expect that in this industrial environment?

Once you arrive at the Maasvlakte, a huge area of reclaimed land to facilitate the growth of the port of Rotterdam, it’s around 10 kilometres cycling in an industrial but quiet area. It is certainly worth the trip!

After that you arrive ‘on the old shore’ with nice villages. Alternatively you can follow the bicycle path along the high way to Rozenburg. This is a more quiet and direct bicycle path along the Brielle Maas (a lake).

The way back is via the quick and regular ferry between Rozenburg and Maassluis. From there it is straight to Delft and The Hague.

Cycling in ‘het Groene Hart’ (the Green Heart) of Holland

‘Het Groene Hart’ (the Green Heart) is a green area in the so called Randstand in the Western part of The Netherlands. It is more or less the area between Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam. You would not expect quiet roads and small villages in the proximity of the big cities. But on a bicycle you can really make very nice tours here.

This tour follows mostly quiet roads, but there are also a few busier stretches.

Here are a few pictures from internet; I will soon add my own pictures.

Starting from my home in Wassenaar it is 85 kilometers. If you make this tour from Leiden, it is around 70 kilometres. As you can see from the height profile (below the map) a large part of this route is below see level. You don’t really notice this when you are on the spot.
If you want to ride this route yourself, you can download the gpx track below the map.
